Ski Racers

This year’s Interschool Ski Championships were held for the first time in Pila in the Aosta valley, after years of being hosted in Les Houches, France.
In previous years Gayhurst has entered up to 8 racers across a variety of age categories. This year, we were represented in the U14 and U12 categories by Max Hetherington and Finely Connolly respectively.

The races drew entries from 117 British based and international schools, many of which are in the Alps. As a result, the races attracted a large number of skiers, with 63 competing in the U14’s and 86 in the U12’s.
Our hotel was at the bottom of the slopes, which ensured the boys (and the parents!) were not late for the 8.30am starts on their two training days. After spending Saturday and Sunday training on the hill from 8.30am until 3.30pm the boys were confident and looking forward to their races on Monday and Tuesday.

Across the two days, Max and Finley competed in both the Giant Slalom and Slalom events and recorded commendable times against talented competition from both the European and English schools. Also racing was Gayhurst Old Boy Morgan Davies, who was representing Reed’s School in the U21 category.

Max and Finley have enjoyed their racing in this highly competitive environment and should be proud of their efforts. The coaching and support they received from their trainers at Impulse Ski Club was excellent, and their parents were never far away to cheer on! It would be great for the School and the team if more skiers could be tempted to compete in future seasons. The 2018 Interschools Championship will again be held in Pila at a similar time of year.

Well done boys!!
